Workshop on Magnetic Storm Dynamics

"Brazil VI"

Athens, 26-29 April 1999

View of the Acropolis of Athens from the Lecabettos Hill
(location of the Workshop Hotel St. George).
In the background, the Aegean sea
and the mountains of the Peloponnese

This was the sixth in a row of Workshops devoted to geomagnetic storms.  The 1st Workshop was held in Brazil in 1991, and received the nickname Brazil I. Following, Brazil II was held in USA, Brazil III in Japan, Brazil IV in USA again, Brazil V in Germany. Brazil VI was held in Athens, Greece.

The Workshop addressed issues pertaining to the dynamics of magnetic storm development: the "geoeffectivity" of particular interplanetary structures in terms of the storm intensity, the "mode" of magnetosphere-ionosphere system response in terms of ring current composition, the characteristics of storm recovery in terms of ring current decay. Two selected storms served as specific examples: the 4 June 1991 and the 24 September 1998 storms. Below you will find a few pictures and the workshop program.
